Fever Q & A

A fever is an increase in body temperature most often caused by an illness. Normally, your body temperature is somewhere around 98.ºF. But any temperature between 97ºF and 99ºF can be normal for you.

A fever may cause uncomfortable symptoms such as body aches and fatigue. In most cases, a fever resolves on its own within a few days.

However, adults should seek medical attention for their fever if it doesn’t improve within a few days, or it’s at least 103ºF. Infants and children may need to seek medical help sooner. Contact your child’s pediatrician for guidance.

An upper respiratory infection (URI) is a contagious infection that primarily affects the upper respiratory tract, including the nose, throat, and sometimes the trachea. It is commonly caused by viruses, such as the rhinovirus (which causes the common cold), influenza viruses, or coronaviruses.

URIs are usually mild and self-limiting, and they can be managed with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications to alleviate symptoms. However, in some cases, medical attention may be needed, especially if symptoms persist or worsen. Some other symptoms incllude:

  • Nasal Congestion
  • Runny Nose
  • Sneezing
  • Sore Throat
  • Coughing
  • Fever

Getting tested for an upper respiratory infection is crucial, especially if you have a fever. A fever can be a common symptom of viral infections like the flu or COVID-19, which fall under upper respiratory infections. Timely testing not only helps determine the cause of the fever but also plays a significant role in preventing the spread of contagious illnesses to others. Identifying the specific virus involved enables appropriate medical guidance and potential interventions, contributing to effective management and, when necessary, isolation measures to protect both the individual and the community.

Early detection through testing facilitates prompt and targeted care, supporting a quicker recovery and reducing the risk of complications associated with respiratory infections
